Something Old, Something New

Walking through the ancient streets of Jerash— the ghost of Roman ruins coexist with the modern world. City walls unearthed, grey pillars against the bright, thriving backdrop of a Jordanian neighborhood. The old haunts the new, history blends with the present day. A city within a city— one can time travel from his or her apartment balcony.

I captured this photo on my iPhone in Jerash, Jordan. A massive afternoon thunderstorm had just passed through the area, leaving us to take shelter under the ancient arches. When the storm calmed, we stepped out and met this view. It captures how two worlds can exist with each other, the foundations of one city rising to create another. The old and the new collide under the same sky.
